Dragons Under My Bed
I found this a little hard to write. I guess I'm not cut out to be a children's author. Hope you don't think it's too bad :)
It was nighttime at the Foreman’s house. Sally was brushing her teeth when she heard her older brother Josh enter the bathroom.
"Oh Sally," her brother sneered.
"Quit it Josh!" Sally exclaimed. "I know you're just trying to scare me!"
"Why would I ever want to scare my sweet little sister?" Josh asked innocently.
"You always do," Sally said, spitting out toothpaste.
Josh snickered, "I'm just trying to tell you that there was a recent news story."
"What news story?" Sally asked wearily.
"Well as it turns out, there have been sightings of monsters underneath little girls' beds."
Sally's heart stopped in fear. "Josh, are you being serious?"
"Of course!" Josh said. "I just wanted you to be aware. Last night a little girl was sleeping, and then she heard a rustling noise under her bed. And when she got up to see what it was . . ."3
Sally eyes widened in fear. Her heart was beating very fast now.
"What was it Josh?"
Josh smiled a menacing grin, "It was a great big green, slimy, scaly, fire breathing dragon! And it gobbled the little girl up in one bite! And the worst part is, they still haven't found the monster . . ."
Sally gasped in fright, but the she hears her daddy's footsteps thumping up the stairs.
“It’s time for bed Sally!” her daddy called from the other room.
Sally finished brushing her teeth. She was walking to her room when Josh blocked her way.
"I'm serious Sally," Josh said. "You better watch out tonight. You never know if the dragon is in your room."
He left then, quietly laughing all the way to his bedroom.
Sally then went into her bedroom. Her daddy was waiting there in the rocking chair next to her bed. For a moment, she had forgotten about what Josh had said and was ready for bed.
“Daddy, read me a story!” Sally said, jumping into bed.
Her daddy took a blue book off the shelf and began to read.
“Once upon a time there was a pretty, pretty princess. . .”
Sally began to see the story play out in head. She saw the pretty princess, the gallant knight, and the evil dragon that kidnapped the princess. At the thought of the dragon, Sally shivered in fear. She remembered everything her brother had told her about the little girl that was on the news.
Sally’s daddy then finished the story, “And they all lived happily ever after, the end.” He smiled then put the closed book back on the shelf. He kissed the top of Sally’s forehead and said, “Goodnight my princess.” With that, he left the room and turned off the light.
But Sally was frightened; really, really frightened. She usually loved this story, but tonight all she could think about was the scary dragon with its slimy scales, snatchy claws, and its fiery tongue.
In the darkness, she remembered how the little girl had heard a rustling noise under the bed. So far she had heard no such sounds, but she still could not fall asleep.
But then out of nowhere, she heard the dreaded rustling noise. Sally whimpered. She was frozen with fear. Soon she knew that the dragon would come a gobble her up in only one bite.
Sally laid there, trying to make any noise that the dragon could hear. What was she to do? Was she just supposed to lie there and hope the dragon would get her, or was she to call for help and take the risk of disturbing the monster?
She could picture the dragon in her mind: it was huge! It had slimy, glowing green scales all over its monstrous body, with red eyes that were the same color as the fire it breathed.
Sally was so terrified! She wanted to run, but she knew if she left her bed the dragon would get her for sure!
But then Sally decided to muster up all the courage she had. She knew she had to risk it.
Sally screamed for her daddy.
"DADDY!!!"
He ran into the room and asked what was the matter.
“Daddy, there’s a dragon under my bed!” Sally cried.
“Sweetheart, there is no such thing as dragons,” her daddy said reassuringly.
“But Josh said there was one on the loose! And the was a rustling noise coming from under my bed. ” Sally said.
“Let me check,” her daddy said. He lifted up the bed skirts to check for a fire-breathing dragon. Instead of finding a scary dragon, there was their family cat, Mittens.
Her daddy picked the cat up and placed him on Sally's bed. The kitty pawed around in the blankets and settled close to Sally.
“See, there's nothing to be afraid of,” Her daddy kissed the top of her head and left the room.
Sally then Let out a sigh of relief. There were no dragons. And like her daddy said, there was nothing to be afraid. She then closed her eyes, and drifted off to sleep.
